Can The Postal Service Be Privatized?

WASHINGTON DC Recent thoughts on privatizing the Postal Service have sparked calls for privatization that triggered the question if it is even possible to “privatize” USPS

The short answer is Yes! but easier said than done due to the process, precedents, politics and the rescive to keep it the People’s Post Office,” said Regional Coordinator Omar Gonzalez. Does The Constitution Protect USPS From Privatization?

The Post Office preceded both the United States and the U.S. Constitution. The P.O. was established by the Conti- nental Congress in 1775. Fourteen years later in 1789 the postal clause’ was placed in Article 1, Section 8. Clause 7 of the US Constitution. That clause gave “Congress” postal powers to establish post offices and post roads and to make laws that are necessary to carry out those tasks.

Founding Fathers such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and others, debated the role of the Post Office and the postal powers of the Congress for three yeas until the passage of the Postal Act of 1792 Continued on page 2
